The competition is open to female applicants – who at the time of application are resident in Bulgaria, aged between 14-18 years old (8th-11th grade in the 2019-20 academic year) – except close relatives of British Embassy Sofia employees and anyone otherwise connected with the judging of the competition.
There is no entry fee.
The British Embassy Sofia will cover travel and accommodation expenses for the winners and their chaperone – including the visit to Vienna and the high-level event in Sofia.
Only one entry will be accepted per person. Multiple entries from the same person will be disqualified.
Winners from the previous Ambassador for a Day campaigns in 2018 and 2019 respectively, cannot enter the current competition.
Closing date for entry will be 23:59 hrs, 12 January 2020. After this date, no further entries to the competition will be permitted.
No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received for whatever reason.
The winners will be selected anonymously based on their essay/video by a judging panel, which includes British Embassy employees and independent members. The number of the winners shall be 18.
The winners will be notified by email within 10 days of the closing date. If a winner cannot be contacted within four working days of notification, the British Embassy reserves the right to withdraw the prize from the winner and pick a replacement winner among the other competitors.
The winners’ prize consists of:
Shadowing a female Ambassador in Sofia;
Opportunity to visit the presidency for a meeting with the Vice President of Bulgaria – Iliana Iotova;
First-hand experience of multilateral diplomacy in Vienna;
Participation at the high-level event in Sofia on 5 March 2020.
The rules of participation in the Ambassador for a Day campaign are as follows:
The winners must have a written parental consent in the prescribed by the law form in order to travel to Vienna, Austria in February 2020 for one overnight stay.
The winners must be available to travel to Sofia for the high-level event on 5 March 2020.
The winners must have a chaperone, who is over 21 years old (parent, teacher, guardian) in order to travel to Vienna in February 2020 and take part in the high-level event in Sofia on 5 March 2020.
The winners as well as their chaperones must have valid EU ID and/or passport.
The winners agree to be photographed and/or filmed during public engagements within the Ambassador for a Day campaign in order to promote the initiative provided that the photos/videos do not prejudice their dignity and reputation.
The British Embassy Sofia’s decision in respect of all matters to do with the competition, including but not limited to the appraisal of the participants, the organisation of carrying out the competition and the awarding of the winners’ prizes will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. The authority shall have the right to change the dates and order or presenting the awards shall a necessity occur whereby the participants shall be notified.
By entering this competition, the entrant and her lawful representative is indicating her agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
All candidates must answer the following question – If you were Ambassador for a Day, how would you promote Bulgaria on the world stage?
The entries can be in either a written format (essay) or a video. The word limit for the essay is 200-250 words and the video should not be longer than two minutes. The essay/video can be in English or Bulgarian.
The entries must be sent via the application form available at: www.ambassadorforaday.com. Together with the essay or video, each candidate must send the following contact details: name, date of birth, email address, and their telephone number. Those details will be used to inform candidates about the results of the competition.
The candidates must enter the competition with essays or videos, which have not been published in print or online prior to the announcement of the Ambassador for a Day competition and have not been used for applying to similar initiatives. The content of the essays and the videos must be original and in line with the theme of the Ambassador for a Day campaign – Bulgaria on the world stage.
